What to Expect in Your First Reformer Class

Have you ever been curious about Pilates but aren't sure what actually happens in a reformer class? You're not alone. Many people walk through our doors for the first time with a mix of excitement and nerves — and walk out wondering why they waited so long to try it.

Here's a friendly, honest look at what your first reformer class at The Pilates Body Studio will actually be like.

First, What Is a Reformer?

The reformer is a gliding carriage with a series of springs, ropes, and pulleys. It looks a little intimidating at first glance, but it's one of the most versatile pieces of exercise equipment ever designed. The spring resistance is adjustable, which means the machine meets you where you are - whether you're recovering from an injury or already quite fit.

Arriving at the Studio

Plan to arrive a few minutes early. Before your first class, you'll receive an emailed video walking you through how to adjust the springs, headrest, and footbar on the reformer. Your instructor will then take you through the basic Pilates postures and explain what to expect and feel as you move through them.

Wear comfortable, form-fitting clothing — nothing too loose, as it can get caught in the carriage — and grip socks. If you forget yours, we have them available at the studio.

The Class Itself

A typical group reformer class is 55 minutes long. You'll move through a series of exercises targeting your core, legs, arms, and back — often all at once. Don't be surprised if muscles you didn't know existed make themselves known the next day.

Our instructors cue closely and will offer modifications as needed. If something doesn't feel right, let your instructor know — you never want to push through discomfort. The beauty of Pilates is that it is intelligent movement. Every exercise, every spring setting, and every posture has a purpose.

What About Keeping Up?

For your first class, just focus on listening to your body and following the cues. You won't get every movement perfect — and that's completely normal. Most clients tell us that by their third or fourth class, things start to click into place.
